I'm the one in the top hat.

I used to perform birthday party magic shows. My business card read: "JAZ is his name. Magic is his game!" This is me at age 11, in Charleston, after performing for a bunch of 5-year-olds, including Will Rhodes (now a visiting student at Wadham College, Oxford via Sarah Lawrence).

two words for this picture: "quiet authority".

Footnote 1: Will is the one in the white turtle-neck.

Footnote 2: If you look closely, you can see that I'm wearing a tie I stole out of my father's closet for the Phoenix final club at Harvard (of which Frank Griswald and my father were both members). Also, the Phoenix club at Brasenose College here in Oxford is known for its straight-up Satanic history. Once a year they still have a dinner for twelve, with a 13th place setting at the head of the table for The Prince of Darkness himself. They toast him at the beginning of the meal. I don't know if they have any official ties to the Harvard club? I do know that they wear mustard-colored waist coats, so, beware of them I guess.

JAZ,

Just wondering, as a result of these magical exploits during your formative years, do you now have any recurring Pavlovian responses to perform sleights of hand every time you see birthday cake? Because I think that might make things little awkward in your first parish.

I remember that guy with the top hat! Magic is still your Game! Have you heard of magic underwear?
