James 4: 13-15

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that."

Do I have to like this if Luther didn't? Just wondering, because I think James' understanding of the vanity of presumption speaks volumes to a culture in love with filling their calendars on their Palm Pilots (ok, perhaps 'love' is too strong). Tillich said something great about living in the "eternal now"...wish I could remember what it was.

dylan-

i dont think "love" is too strong of a word. it may even be too light of a word. maybe the phrase "culture who is violently obsessed, engrossed, in bondage to and in love with themselves, their sin, and palm pilots" will suffice.

maybe....

thank God this won't/can't change without intervention from The Outside. If it it could/would change, then we would never seek out Jesus or see our need for a savior. Ever!

I once met a woman who showed me her "addiction" - it was three sheets of A4 paper, each sheet is the calendar for a month - and it was COMPLETELY filled with appointments, phone numbers, etc. She confessed to her "addiction". It was powerful.
